RADIO GATEWAYS
What is a Radio Gateway?
Generally, a gateway is a bridging system for radios, phones, computers and more. A Radio Gateway allows one radio to talk to another radio that operates on a different frequency. For example an HF radio that needs to communicate with 800 MHz radio.
Gateways connect trunked talk groups, encrypted radios, public telephone systems, and cellular or satellite phone connections. Some gateways are tactical or vehicle mounted but many are used in permanent configurations.
Radio gateways can also bridge the gap between radio systems and IP-based networks. Interoperability between different technologies is supported for these:
-
Portable Handheld Radios, Land Mobile Radios (LMR), Base Station and Consolette Radios.
-
Manpack Radios including Ground-to-Air and Line-of-Sight Satellite Radios. Radios
-
Interoperation among HF, VHF, UHF, and high-frequency networks, including line-of-sight and satellite
-
Data and MANET Radios with Audio
-
GSM Calling Devices such as Cellphones
-
IP Devices such as Smartphones and Computers
What is RoIP?
From a system point of view, RoIP (Radio over Internet Protocol) is essentially Voice over IP (VoIP) with a Push to Talk (PTT) option. While it is similar to VoIP, it augments two-way radio communications rather than phone calls.
What Purpose does a Radio Gateway Serve?
The essential function of a radio gateway is to interconnect different types of communication devices. Applications vary from simple push-to-talk systems such as a computer communicating to a group of radios to complex, multi-jurisdictional systems interconnecting regional radio networks. Why should you use a gateway for digital radios?
There are plenty of reasons to move to digital radio, but the biggest reason many people and organizations do this is the beneficial shift to RoIP.
One of the significant novelties of digital radio is the interoperability it can offer organizations that previously struggled to link up users who had different dispatch equipment. An IP gateway can boost that interoperability for networks still straddling that digital fence.
Another significant benefit here is the level of flexibility. IP gateways can work with various equipment configurations – from a small desk console to a fully-featured solution for organizations with more comprehensive and expansive dispatch needs.
